How Much Does a Retaining Wall Cost in Perth?

Updated October 2026

Published Perth guides put installed retaining walls at roughly $250 to $650 per square metre of wall face, depending on material, height and access. A 20 m wall at 1 m high (20 m²) works out around $5,000 to $13,000. Drainage, footings and removing an old wall can move the price, so get a measured quote.

Prices below come from public Perth price guides. They're not our prices and they don't agree with each other perfectly, which is normal: every block is different. Use them to set a budget, then get a fixed price from a measure.

A worked example

Say you need a wall 20 metres long and 1 metre high. That's 20 square metres of wall face.

  • At the low end of the published limestone range ($250/m²): about $5,000
  • At the top of the published block and sleeper ranges ($650/m²): about $13,000
  • Using the per-lineal-metre figure for a 1 m limestone wall ($295–$630/m): about $5,900 to $12,600

That's rough maths from published numbers, not a quote.

What moves the price

  • Height. Taller walls need deeper footings and more material, and past 500 mm many councils want a building permit and sometimes engineering.
  • Footing depth. In loose sand footings may need to go deeper than they look like they need. Hitting the limestone shelf can mean coring.
  • Drainage. Ag drain, clean aggregate backfill and an outlet. It costs money and it's what stops a wall failing. A quote that leaves it out is quoting a different job.
  • Access. Narrow side paths and steep blocks mean more hand work.
  • The old wall. Demolition and spoil removal add cost. We include them in the quote rather than billing them after.
  • A fence on top. Usually quoted with the wall as one job. See retaining wall with a fence on top.

Questions

Is limestone cheaper than sleepers?

The published ranges overlap a lot ($250–$650/m² for limestone vs $400–$700/m² for sleepers in the guides above). Height, access and drainage usually matter more than the material.

Does the price include drainage?

Ours does. Always check that any quote includes the ag drain and backfill. It's the part that decides how long the wall lasts.

Do I pay for engineering?

Only where the height or the council requires it. We tell you at the measure if your wall needs it.
