Retaining Walls in Duncraig

Duncraig is one of the more established suburbs in the City of Joondalup, with plenty of homes that have been there for decades and gardens to match. That means a lot of our Duncraig work is on older walls: limestone that's started to lean, timber sleepers that have rotted out, and boundaries where the old fence and wall both need replacing.

Older walls and what goes wrong

Many older Perth walls were built before people paid much attention to drainage. With no ag drain and no clean backfill, winter rain soaks into the sand behind the wall and pushes. Over the years that shows up as a lean, a bulge at the belly, or cracking along the joints. Patching the face won't fix it. The cause is behind or under the wall.

What we do in Duncraig

  • Assess the old wall honestly: repair if it will last, rebuild if it won't
  • Demolish and remove the old wall and spoil
  • Rebuild in limestone to suit an established garden, or in sleepers or panels on a boundary
  • Replace the fence on top at the same time so it's all square again

Plenty of Duncraig gardens are mature, so access can be tight. We plan the job around it and leave the site clean.

Council

Duncraig is in the City of Joondalup. Its fact sheet says no building permit is needed for walls retaining no more than 0.5 m that meet its other conditions. Higher walls and walls across a boundary need more. We check before we book the job.

Questions

My old limestone wall is leaning. Can it be saved?

Sometimes, if the cause is local. Often a lean means drainage or footings, and the honest answer is a rebuild. We'll tell you which.

Can you work around established gardens?

Yes. We plan access at the measure and protect what's staying.
